The 4th Tennessee Cavalry under the command Colonel Baxter Smith was organized on November 2, 1862, and reorganized again on in January 1863. The regiment was a composite unit of 11 companies “A-M” no “J” with one Field and Service Company attached for a total of twelve companies. The regiment was formed by consolidating four cavalry companies, from Murray’s (4th) Cavalry Regiment, two cavalry companies from Spiller’s Battalion, two cavalry companies from Davis’ Cavalry Battalion, two cavalry companies from Major Bledsoe’s Cavalry Battalion and two General’s Escort Companies. One company was commanded Captain Paul Anderson company which had been which had been General John Wharton’s Escort. The second company was commanded by Captain John J. Partin from Hardy’s Squadron which had been General John P. McCown’s Escort. There was also one cavalry company enlisted or conscripted soldiers during the war whose role was to provide the regiment with messengers and scouts and replacements in depleted companies. On January 23, 1863 the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, became an organized unit in the Confederate States of America, Army of the Tennessee.
Its twelve companies consisted of men enlisted or conscripted from the Counties from Blount, Cannon, Davidson, Dekalb, Fentress, Hamilton, Knox, Marshall, Rutherford, Smith, Sullivan, Sumner, and Wilson Counties, Tennessee. Also men from the States of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, and Virginia. The regiment served under Generals Wharton, Bragg, H. D Davidson, Harrison, Wheeler, Hardee, Longstreet, and Hood. The regiment served in the Western and Eastern Theaters of the war during it time in Confederate Service. The regiment served in Middle Tennessee from 1863-64. In late 1864 and early 1865 they saw service in Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The regiment served with honor at the major battles Bardstown, Munfordville and Perryville Kentucky in 1862. Dover, Chattanooga, Knoxville and the battle for Middle Tennessee in 1863-64. Saltville, Virginia, 1864, and Chickamauga, New Hope Church, Tunnel Hill, Georgia and other battle during the 1864-65 Atlanta Campaign against Sherman’s March to the Sea.
When Colonel Baxter Smith was captured on May 10, 1863 at Caney Springs, Tennessee, the command of the Fourth Tennessee Regiment was given to Lt. Colonel Paul Anderson who had the honor to lead the last Confederate cavalry charge of the war at Bentonville, North Carolina in May 1865. The Regiment surrendered on April 26, 1865 with less then two hundred and fifty men at Charlotte North Carolina. The regiment was paroled on May 3, 1865 and the men return home to their families.
