*James Lemuel Barry-[No military record] The last surviving veteran of the Confederacy from the State of Tennessee was the last veteran from Lebanon. James Lemuel Barry the last centenarian was born in Nashville on Berry Hill (now Commerce Street) in 1847. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Henry Barry and he spent his youth in their home and printing shop.

Afraid his parents would refuse permission, he walked 30 miles from Nashville to Lebanon to enlist in the army. He joined the 4th Tennessee Cavalry under the command of Lt. Colonel Paul Anderson and Capt. J. R. Lester. He walked along the side of the cavalry to Sparta before obtaining a horse. Barry later commented he joined the cavalry because he did not like to walk.

Of all the stories of the war he related, the one of his assignment of a two weeks of picket duty. Assigned to a farm near Asheville, North Carolina Mr. Barry said "The old man who owned the farm had 15 barrels of good whiskey and a large stock of fine brandy. He told us to help ourselves when we felt like it, and we stayed there for two weeks." He participated in the Battles of Beech-Head Church, Georgia, Rock Springs, North Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina. The battle following the one at Bentonville saw Barry’s company surrendering. The retreat to the sea in Georgia with General Sherman was still vivid, even though his years had added up.

He returned to Lebanon, married Miss Eugenia Bonds and moved to a farm on Cole Ferry Pike. His second marriage was to Miss Mary Katherine Ramsey. Both preceded him in death.

He was an active member of the Church of Christ and attended church regularly until eyesight stated leaving. This loss also kept him from daily walks and trips to town.

On February 11, 1947 he celebrated his 100th birthday. For this special day, a dinner was held in his honor and Governor James Nance McCord was the principal

Speaker. On April 15, 1947 he joined his comrades … another era closed her books.
