One of the first if not the first mounted unit to respond to call to arms in the State of Tennessee. The Original Company Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers and privates were sworn into State Service by Assistant Inspector General Joseph G. Pickett on June 18, 1861 at Nashville, Tennessee.

*Toney Chapman-A Black man born in or near Farmington, Tennessee, in Marshall County on June 18, 1849. His master was Private B. F. Chapman. Tony served with Company A, from 1863 to the end of the war. When discharged from the army at Raleigh,

North Carolina, he moved back to Marshall County to live with his former master for about several years. On June 21, 1921, Toney filed for a "Colored Man’s Application for

Pension" with the State of Tennessee. He was Seventy–two years old and with his wife had a combined income of $857.00. Scott D. Davis and W. W. Walker both of Lewisburg, Tennessee signed his application as witnesses of his service time during the war. Toney Chapman died on September 27, 1923 in Marshall County at the age of seventy-four. (A Negro man of color to receive a pension he had to show residency in the State of Tennessee for three years if they served in a Confederate States Army unit from Tennessee. He would also have had to been discharged at the end of the war while being attached to the unit).
