Native American Publications

A Special note to those who say "I can't find my ancestors because they were Cherokee Indians -- and there are no records on Indians".

You aren't looking in the right places!

In addition to the estimated fifteen thousand rolls of microfilmed information available from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, The Eastern Band of Cherokees in NC, The Oklahoma Archives, The United States National Archives, the British, French and Spanish Archives.

Below is a selected list of some (not all!) of the books and microfilm concerning native American tribes that I have in my own library.

The Cherokees are, by FAR, the best documented ethnic group in the United States. If you are not finding your ancestors in the Cherokee records, then you should consider that they could have been members of one of the other 500+ tribes that were here "when Columbus got lost", or may not be Indian of any tribe!

Special Note:
Of more recent origins are the CD's that are becoming available. One (in particular) has become my main source of Cherokee information--  marketed by heritagebooks.com: #0878 "Vital Information From The Guion Miller Roll". This CD includes an index to all applicants- (accepted and rejected) and is searchable by name, maiden name (if female) and by application number. It shows the application number, sex, surname (at the time the application was filed), first name, maiden name (if female), year of birth, place of birth, city and state the applicant was filing from in 1906/1909, and the Soundex Code. If you find an ancestor on this list, then you can order a copy of the original application which will list three generations on back- (and their children).
