Carter County Tennessee -- Pensioners 1835

Several acts have been passed by congress to award pensions to people that served in the Revolutionary War.  The Act of 1818 only granted pensions base on the financial need of the applicant.  Before this act, pensions were awarded based on the disability or death of a serviceman.  There were so many applications under the act of 1818 that it was amended in 1820.  The Act of 1820 required that every pensioner receiving payments under the act of 1818 must submit a certified schedule of his estate and income. This reduced the pension rolls by several thousand.

In 1823 an act was passed that restored many of the pensions lost under the 1820 act.  On 15 May 1828, another service-pension act was enacted.  It granted full pay for life to surviving officers and enlisted men of the Revolutionary War who were eligible for benefits under the terms of a Continental Congress resolution of 15 May 1778.

On 7 June 1832, a liberal pension act was passed that extended pensions to addition people.  Every officer or enlisted man who had served at least two years in the Continental Line or State troops, volunteers or militia, were eligible for a pension of full pay for life.  Naval and marine officers and enlisted men were also included.  Veterans who had served less than the two years but longer than six months were eligible for a reduced pension.

The following is a list of the men receiving this pension who resided in Carter County, Tennessee in 1835.
