Bill Smiddy Has Been Charged with Killing; Riding in Auto At Time

Alf Sharp, 40, was shot through the forehead from the dark as a man, alledged to have said that he was Bill Smiddy, halted a car in which Sharp and Rufe Speaks were riding just across the Kentucky line from Jellico Monday night. Bill Smiddy, 23, was arrested in Jellico, Ky, and taken to jail at Williamsburg.

Speaks, a superintendent of the Big Nickle Mining Co. at Clearfield who was driving the car in which Sharp was riding, said that as they approached Jellico, Ky, a man stepped out into the road and signalled to them to stop.

The man said, "Who is this?" according to Speaks.

"This is Alf Sharp."

Then there was a gunshot and Sharp slumped in his seat, Speaks said.
