5 ft. 6 in. tall, Complexion Fair, Hair Light, Eyes Blue, Listed as trader, laborer, Farmer, and Hotel Business. 68 years old in 1912.
Enlisted Aug 15, 1862 18 years old Cumberland Gap, TN, Claiborne, County. Under Capt. James A. Montgomery. Discharge Nashville July 6, 1865. War Dept Record and Pension Div. Sept 13, 1889 Corporal James Smitty pension of $72.00 per month. Died May 31, 1925, Jellico Tenn. Born Dec 9, 1844 in Union Co., TN and born Dec. 9, 1845 in Jacksboro, TN, both dates listed in paperwork. Lived Carryville, Jacksboro, Newcombe, and Jellico Tenn.

Per paperwork, "Contracted sever cold at Murfreesboro in Dec. 1862, causing Disease of Respiratory organs and Rheumatism from exposure and have injury of Back and Legs injury of left knee, Piles, Pains of back is such as to disable me from work alone also have heart disease and results there of." Also says disability is Rheumatism, back, throat, hips, and legs.

9 or 10 children the writing is very hard to make out--First dates from paper filled out in 1915, second date from paper filled out in 1898.
