Seeking information on MARY GREEN, born 1835, died unknown and her husband FRANKLIN M. TRIPLETT, born 1835, died 1908. MARY GREEN and her parents, names unknown, were Cherokee who lived in the Benton area. They were on the Trail of Tears and ended up in Oklahoma. At some point, soon after they arrived in OK, they returned to the Benton area. MARY GREEN and FRANKLIN TRIPLETT's daughter, MALINDA TRIPLETT and JOHN R. POTTER are buried outside of Benton. (I do not know which cemetery, only that it is outside of Benton.) If you have any information please contact me via email steerage@richnet.net

Pursley and King families are my ancestors.
John Pursley & family lived near Red Clay and was on the 1850 & 1870 censuses. John's mother, Nancy King Pursley was with him in 1870. She was in her eighties. John & wife Mary had 11 children by 1870; 6 sons and 5 daughters. John, b about 1814 was an older brother to my gg-grandfather James Guion Pursley. I believe he and Mary lived in this area around Red Clay many years, possibly just across the TN border into GA. Their belief was either Presbyterian or Baptist. Their children were: Nancy, Mary, William, Samuel, John, Robert, Emily?, Amanda Jane, Jackson, Nicholson & Martha -and possibly more after 1870.
If anyone knows of any descendants for this family or where they are buried, etc., please contact me - thank you.

I have found some additional data in the Chancery Court Records of Bradley County which I would like to share here and also pose new questions.
William Wallace Cowan (b 1800; d 28 Feb 1854) had a first marriage and from that, a daughter Mary Catherine. Mary Catherine m. Wm. H. Hammond. In 1856, she is described as "of age and married".
W. W. Cowan was one of the three original commissioners of Charleston, Bradley Co. He was in that position until the time of his death, was agent for the railroad, was the senior partner in Cowan and Hammond (a general store and a farm...Hammond being a son-in-law). He held dozens of notes (IOUs) on Charleston residents (1840s - 1850s)There is a reference to his having had land in Meigs County.
He died at home and intestate at age 54. James Knox was appointed guardian of his five minor children. (I suppose the times required a male guardian. The five children seemed to stay with their mother and her new husband, John M. Bates). The youngest, Evaline, then died at a young age sometime after her father's death. John Miller was appointed to settle the estate and this took several years. There was a prolonged dispute between the daughter of the first wife (Mary Catherine Cowan Hammond, wife of Wm.H. Hammond) and the second wife (Isabella Cozby Cowan Bates, now wife of John M. Bates and Cowan's minor children.) Among the many called to give depositions in the matter were John D. Chattin, who said he had been a brother-in-law to Cowan; Joseph Cowan; James Cowan; Perlina Cowan and a Martha McKeown (no information on relationship with the four latter individuals).
Now, the new questions that I have are: Who was W.W. Cowan's first wife? What was the relationship of these other Cowans to the deceased elder Cowan? How exactly was Chattin a brother-in-law to Cowan? Finally, is there anyone working on the Hammonds of this area? Any help appreciated.

Bradley Co., Chancery Ct. case file 65-B, June 18, 1841, says William [T.] MELTON is son of David MELTON and he is a minor--"cannot make title to land until he comes of age." This William was born abt 1821/2. Wm sold his land in 1849 but is not in 1850 Bradley or Polk Co., Census. Where did he go? Did he die? Could Perlina MELTON in 1850 Bradley Co., TN be his wife, even though she is 4 years his elder? Or did he move West to Alabama, AR, etc.? He could be father of William Taylor Melton born 1841 or so in Bradley Co., TN, and who fought in the Civil War. Also researching David Melton (b. 1801 SC) ancestry. Have reason to believe he is the David in 1830 Wayne Co., TN census. Will exchange information and help with research.

We do not know who his parents were. If his parents came to TN from NC, they could be a number of the STAMPERs listed in TN census records. Does anyone have any helpful information for us? I need to compile as much data as possible on John McCanless and all other McC that lived in Mechlenburg or were kin to John. John was the father of Richard A. McCanless who md. Mandamma Grigsby and died in Harrison, Hamilton Co TN in 1856.
According to John's pension file he was a volunteer under Capt. James Harris, joining between the 1st and 10th of October 1775. Also serving under Maj. James White, Col. Thomas Polk and Col. Rutherford. This unit was under the overall command of Gen. Richardson. This service was for a period of two months.
John again volunteered in 1778 under the same commanders for about two months and again in 1779 for three months. He had also served for six months in 1776 as a waggoneer.
>From this same document it is clear that he was born in County Down Ireland and left from England in 5th of June 1772 arriving in NewCastle Delaware in August, 1772. Resided in Baltimore, Maryland for a few months and removed to Mechlenburg NC in 1773. He remained there until 1799 then went to Blount Co TN. That is why I'm interested in him.
James McCandless md. Elizabeth Kelly Caldwell in Blount Co. TN on Feb 10, 1801. They went to Marion Co TN and lived in Dist. 6 on the river that bordered Hamilton Co TN. There seems to be a connection between James and John of Mechlenburg. Therefore I want to find all I can on John and all his children because James is my line.
This John lived in Blount Co for two years and then moved to Knox Co TN until 1808. Then to Rhea Co TN and was there until 1834 when he moved to Maury Co TN.
In one affidavit dated 9/16/1835 under oath in open court John states he is 84 years of age. That means he was born 1750 or 1751.
Anyone having some names of the children with some kind of documentation please contact me.
