A
Name and File Number DO NOT indicate the
case is particularly about that name,
rather it indicates ONLY that the Name is
found SOMEWHERE in the file of the
case.)
This is an index to original Bradley County, Tennessee
Chancery
Court case files stored at the History Branch of the Cleveland Public
Library. This index includes the names of
principal parties, witnesses, officers of the court and individuals
mentioned in testimony.
A file number and a brief description of the case follow each name. Individuals making a deposition (giving testimony)
are listed in the index with a (d) following their names.
In some instances files are incomplete making it impossible to
determine the actual file number of a case. In
order to include those cases in this work, they were assigned a number
followed by the letter "z". A few cases heard in
the County Court are included in this index. The
letters "CC" preceding the file number identifies them.
The Chancery Court is a court of equity. Property
disputes, estate settlements, debts and divorces are examples of the
kinds of cases heard by the Chancellor, the court's presiding judge. Historical and genealogical researchers will find a
wealth of information in these files. They
present a social history of Bradley County and bring this time period
to life as no other source available to us can.
The History
Branch is unable to accept requests to photocopy case
files. You are invited to visit the History Branch and Archives, 833
North Ocoee Street, Cleveland, TN 37311 or the Tennessee State Library
and Archives, 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243 to view
the files on microfilm.
