1. Rene1 Julien1 was born 04 Jul 1669 in Vitre , Brittany, France, and died Aft. 1744 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. He married Mary or Margaret Bullock2 Abt. 1695 in Bermuda ?, daughter of Captain Bullock and Mary. She was born Bet. 1680 - 1682 in Warwick Section, Island of Bermuda3,3, and died Abt. 1750 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.
Notes for Rene Julien:
Julien/Julian/Julin and other spellings:
Rene Julien, born in France in 1669, in Ireland in 1690, and came to America about 1700. Family tradition has him stopping at the island of Bermuda where he married Mary Bullock. He went first to the shores of the Carolinas, and loosing two sons there, he moved to the more healthy region on the Eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. (There was a colony of French families on the Santee River in South Carolina who began to migrate about 1712, due to the unhealthy climate. This family may well have been among them.) Rene Julien and his family were living in Cecil County, Maryland, in 1712.
The earliest record of Rene in Bohemia Manor is in 1720 as shown by land leases. The rest of the period from 1712 until 1720 is blank so far as he is concerned, except for the record of the birth of his son Isaac in 1716, which appears in the Register of St. Ann's Parish at Annapolis which is now in the hall of Records there.
Rene and Mary had seven sons and three daughters who grew up in Bohemia Manor. Whether or not they were born there is uncertain. It is known that the two daughters were married there, and it is probable that some of the other children were also. By 1737, when Rene assigned his lease in Bohemia Manor to Henry McCoy he was 68 years old. It is assumed that this was the date of his going to Winchester, Fredrick County, Virginia. Rene was still living in 1744, the last documentary date of him known to exist. It is thought that he and his wife are buried in old Opequon Cemetery near Winchester (land for this cemetery was given by William Hoge, into whose family son Isaac married).
Shortly after Braddock's defeat in 1755, during the French and Indian War, the five sons who went with Rene to Winchester from Bohemia Manor, fled with their families due to terror of the Indians to Orange County, North Carolina ( which later became Randolph and Gulliford County), where they took land grants. Two sons did not accompany Rene to Winchester, remaining in Maryland, Stephen (who is named in the lease from Ephraim Augustus Herman to Rene in 1720) and Jacob. They moved to Prince County, Maryland, where the first record of them appears in 1743.
Rene Julien in America became a slave holder and a Presbyterian, and hated the Quakers for their testimony against war and slavery. He was large and tall and said to have red hair and to have been a perverse man with fiery disposition. Among present generations of his descendants, many branches have red-haired members. Mary Bullock Julien was said to have been a great lady. She was of Spanish decent. Search of Bermuda records fails to reveal her marriage to Rene but evidence seems to point to her having been a daughter of Captain Stephen Bullock who came from a Quaker family. If this is correct, the attitude of Rene and Mary must have sometimes conflicted. Some of their descendants in North Carolina became Quakers.
Descendants of Rene and Mary include many statesmen, teachers, ministers, lawyers and doctors.
Additional information from Julian researchers:
"As for the Rene and Pierre story, it is (I think) one of those things where someone has taken information that was interesting and connected it to their family without checking the facts and information. If you look at the information on Pierre that comes from original sources and compare it with information taken from some websites, genforums, and alot of the places where people send in their lines, you will find that names have been changed. In some places they have removed Pierre's name from his father's will and put in Rene. They have also added Rene as an additional child in other cases. So over the last 50 years or so a lot of their information is interwoven. Both are said to have been born around 1660. Both are said to have fought with William of Orange. Pierre can be found on the Hugueont lists, but Rene hasn't been (so far). We've been researching back and collecting family histories, etc. before 1900. George Washington Julian's, the congressman, daughter, Grace Giddening Clark wrote a history around the first part of the 1900's. She doesn't refer to Rene as a de St. Julien. Rebecca Downing White's history (1940s?), I believe, mentions Pierre de St. Julian, but also states that she doesn't believe that there was connection. It seems to be sometime after this that the problem begins and snowballed."
Beverly Julian
"I can give you a brief of what is known. Rene Julien first landed on the coast of SC in about 1712. There are two land indenture records, 1712 & 1714. He apparently did not stay long, moving to the E. shore of Chesapeake Bay. there are land lease records in Cecil Co MD. After a few years, he moved the family to the Northern Neck region of VA, where he died ca 1745. He had seven sons who achieved some sort of record- I am in the process of doing a genealogy of the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons (with as much of his female descendants as is possible- not much, of course.)
Now- the undocumented family tradition is ( and we do know now where this tradition came from): Rene was a French Huguenot who fought with William f Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in 1680, apparently a professional soldier. He was rewarded with land in the Colonies. He stopped off in Bermuda and married a Mary Bullock. This marriage cannot be verified, but there was a Bullock family there at the time. There is more with regard to his appearance, but anyway....
The Julian family branch who first set down this tradition, also created the link to the St. Juliens. The document which did all this is in the MD State Archives. Isaac, the 1st, was one of Rene's sons, and my gggggrandfather. I can give you some references if you would like- but with caution." Cheers- Paul Julian

It is believed that George was injured in the battle at the Fort of Dorchester and died of his wounds there. He owned considerable land (both grants and purchased). He moved to Guilford, North Carolina in 1755. His land joined his brother, Issac's. At least two sons Fought in the Rev. War.
This George was a loyalist. Some records seem to state that his lands were confiscated for public use but others do not support this. "Estate not confiscated, but sold, 1788 by administrator Jacob Julian for George's heirs" In regards to his death:1/18/1782, Jemina Ponder'affadavit saith: She did live at the Creek Meeting House below Dorchester and that George Julian who did live on King's Creek in District aforesaid was there and she said despondent did see the said George Julian depart this life between the first and middle of September in the year 1781.

Samuel Julian in Rutherford Co. NC by Bev Julian
The copies of notes that I have are from Mrs. Frank T. Manly via the Rebecca Downey White Collection from the Hall of Records in Annapolis, MD. I will type some of them verbatim:
George Julian I married Martha Denton, daughter or sister of Samuel Denton. Married in Cecil Co., MD or Fred'k Co., VA.
By tradition, the father of Samuel D. (Denton?) Julian (b. 7-4-1780 Rutherford Co., NC and m. 3-17-1803 Mary Condrey - same county, by Bible record) died shortly after Samuel's birth and his mother married later a man named Black. Justifiable conjecture, supported by abundant other evidence, makes the deceased father of Samuel D. Julian the George Julian who died on King's Cr., S.C. Sept. 1781 and his wife was still named Martha. While Samuel's brother George (II), who was born in 1770 ca., named a first daughter Martha, and his brother Jacob (b.d. unknown) named a daughter Martha (will)(2nd dau.) his 1st dau. being Mary, which was name of George I's mother. George I must have been an old man when George II and Samuel were born.
Note 8-2-68 - Some of this information sounds confusing, but I copied it exactly as is -
Reference - Rebecca Downey White Collection, Box 11, folder 2, p. 8E, Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland
There are some errors in the above work, one of which is the reference to George II, born 1770. That George is the son of Jacob and grandson of George and Martha. George II was born about 1731 according to my notes.
The above notes would lean toward Martha Denton being the "Widow Black" and Samuel Denton Julian being the son of George I Julian and Martha Denton. According to dates of their birth, this would have made both George and Martha in their seventies when Samuel Denton Julian was born. I have a hard time buying that, too. My thought was that Samuel Denton Julian was the son of one of George and Martha's sons other than Jacob. But I have found little information on any of them other than George II. Look forward to any comments or discussion on this topic to determine Samuel Denton Julian's parentage.

Record of the birth of Isaac in 1716 appears in the Register of St. Ann's Parish at Annapolis which is in the Hall of Records there.
In the war that is known as the French and Indian War, fought between the French and her Canadian Colonies and Britain and her American Colonies. The French stirred up the Indians against the American Colonies. There were many attacks on the frontiers of Virginia, Penn. and New York. There was much fear of the Indians in the area where the Julians lived. Fearing an attack from the Indians was eminent, Isaac Julian loaded a wagon with the most necessary things to survive and fled down the Colonial Road that ran from Penn. to N.C. It is said that he traveled by night and hid in the day time to prevent being sighted by the Indians. This occurred in Sept. 1755. He finally Came to Deep River near Present Worthville, N.C. Here he located. He later received a grant from Earl Granville for 640 acres of land. His descendants live on the same land today. This is copied from The Rouths of Randolph Co. N.C. by Lawrence W. Routh.

Title: Will of Jacob Julian
Publication: Will Book "A" p. 25 - York County 1800 File No. 488
For many years the most puzzling questions to our branch of the Julian Family has been, "Who was the father of George Julian who married Rebecca McKinney, who, in turn was the father of Isom Julian, etc." The following seems rather conclusive proof to me, and will until proved wrong be accepted as our line of descent." Elizabeth Cate Manly
Jacob Julian was administrator of George Julian's estate
Jacob Julian was bondsman for George Julian in his marriage to Rebecca McKinney
Jacob Julian appointed his son George Julian as one of the executors of his estate

Notes for Samuel Frazier:
Samuel is an extremely interesting character! Consider these life experiences in support of that statement:
" Served as a private under Colonel John SEVIER during the Battle of Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War
" Served as an officer under General Nathaniel GREENE including the Battle of Cowpens
" Helped to organize the New Hope Monthly Meeting (1795) on Ripley Creek in present day, Greene County, Tennessee
" Served as a delegate from Greene County to the state's Constitutional Convention in Knoxville (1796) where he served on the committee that actually drafted the Constitution
" Served as a Tennessee State Senator (1st, 2nd and 3rd general assemblies) as the only representative from Greene County
" A lawyer, by profession; a Whig, politically
" Served as Attorney General for the 11th District of Tennessee (1831-1836)
" A Quaker, by religion (quite extraordinary for a soldier of the Revolution)
(sources for the above information include: Tennessee State History of the D.A.R., 171; D.A.R. Rosters and Soldiers, 679; Hale and Merritt, Tennessee and Tennesseans, 559, 722; Miller's Official Manual, 189; White, Messages of the Governors of Tennessee, VIII, 178.)
Samuel's tombstone reads: (Highland Memorial Cemetery, Knox County, Tennessee)
"A Whig of 1776, one of the framers of the Constitution of 1796.
He served in state legislature several times.
Ancestor of Gov. and Senator Frazier
He served in Revolutionary War and Participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain.
He and his family came to Greene County sometime after the war."
"Shortly after the Revolutionary War, Samuel moved his family to western North Carolina, settling in what is now Greene County, Tennessee. He died in Knox County, Tennessee on his ninetieth birthday, April 10, 1839, surviving his wife, Rebecca, by less than one year. Rebecca reached the age of 90 as well (1748-1838).
In the Revolution, Samuel Frazier espoused the cause of the colonists in their struggle for the right to govern themselves. Abt. 1789, seven years before the frontier area west of the Appalachians attained statehood, Samuel Frazier and his family moved from Guilford County, North Carolina, to Greene County (now Tennessee).
He soon became a leader in Greene County and in 1795 was elected a delegate to Tennessee's first constitutional convention. He was chosen to be a member of the committee, which drafted the important document, and his signature is affixed to the original constitution, which is now in the state archives in Nashville. Serving as the first state senator from Greene County, he helped to organize the state government under the new constitution prior to the admittance of Tennessee into the Union on June 1, 1776.
Soon after 1800, Samuel and his wife Rebecca moved to Knox County, TN where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Both of them lived to be ninety years of age. They were the parents of seven children whose living descendants can be found throughout the United States. Those who have gone before include some who lie in almost forgotten family cemeteries in Tennessee and North Albama and at least one who is buried in widely known Arlington National Cemetery.
Descendants of Samuel and Rebecca have served in all of the wars in which our nation has been involved since the American Revolution, and two attained the rank of General. They were in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, on both sides in the Civil War, in World Wars 1 and 2, and in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. A number of them gave their "last full measure of devotion." (See Roll of Honor, p.189.)" Virginia Knight Nelson

Notes for Rene Julian:
Renne fought at the Battle of Guilford's Court House during the Revolutionary War. This is in Greensboro. Nathaniel Green was the commander. Renne was probably with state militia rather than the Continental Army. Green was very unhappy with the behavior of the Militia. They were poorly trained and had only hunting rifles and no bayonets. They were put out front and told to fire off two rounds, pull back and let the better trained army take over. Most ran after one shot, seeing the British rushing towards them with bayonets. A few fought very bravely. We do not know what Renne did that day. The British won but at a very high cost.
After the battle Renne, Solomon Trogdon and another man were captured by a Guerilla Army (Probably David Fanning, a well know Tory in the area) at the home place in Randolph Co. At the time his daughter Patience was a little girl. When the soldiers came inquiring where Renne Julian was, his wife told them he was not there. Patience spoke up and said, 'No Mamma, he is in the barn making a shuck collar". The three were captured and were being taken to prison. The first night out they escaped. The third man was killed but Renne and Soloman escaped by hiding in a hollow log. They lay there with soldiers on horses jumping over the log. This story was printed in the Allred Family Newsletter, page 12, Issue #40, Fall 1999. It was also in a school genealogy report by Carolyn Elain Allred.
Some sources say he died in Knox County, Tennessee.

C./England, and died 23 Jun 1824 in Grove Hill, Clark County, Alabama.
Notes for Ruth Julian:
There is a story handed down that Ruth was heroine of the Rev. war. When she was in her early teens, she was used as a Messenger for the Rev. troops. On one mission she was stopped by the British forces. Before they could take possession of the paper she was carrying, she threw it into the camp fire where it was destroyed.
The Bible record her death as March 13. 1852 but gravestone is 1848?
Reference Ruth JULIAN daughter of Peter that married Elijah PUGH.
I have attached a scan of the page out of Elijah's bible, that I have in my possession, that gives Ruth's death date as 1848. I have also attached a photograph of her gravestone for your records. Ruth was my ggg grandmother. I also have photographs of the other gravestones in the PUGH cemetery there at Grove Hill.
I hope that this helps some with the question about the date of her death.

George Julian and his family are listed among the first settlers of Logan's Chapel Community in Blount County. George and Rebecca died within a few days of each other with a mysterious disease called "black tongue". They are buried at Logan's Chapel Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee.
The French St. Julien was Anglicized to Julian so was the Scottish McKinish or McInnish made McKinney.
Glenn Julian
I believe that the George Julian mentioned here is the father of Isom Julian, and that the James Julian mentioned here may well be the brother of Isom.
Deed 214 in 1817 would date the Julian migration from Rutherford County NC to Blount County TN.
I'm not clear when the region around Maryville-Wildwood became available (according to TN law!) for settlement by whites. "The District South of the French Broad & Holston" contained land claimed by whites already in 1791-1796; more was ceded in the Treaty of Tellico, 2 Oct 1798, but some land was retained by the Cherokee in SE Blount county. In 1833 it became lawful to claim land in the Hiwassee District. See TSLA map #408 [which I do not have].

Notes for Samuel Denton Julian:
Samuel was a Methodist minister.
Samuel Denton Julian, the one who married Mary Condry, was married on March 17, 1803, according to Bible records. He was married to Mary until his death on December 10, 1851. I do not believe him to be the son of Jacob, as he was not mentioned in Jacob's will along with all of Jacob's other children. One story I have found has Samuel Denton Julian's father dying when SDJ was young and his mother remarrying a man with the last name of Black. This could possibly be supported by a deed record in Rutherford County, NC between Samuel Julin [sic] and James Black in 1804. There is also a Rutherford County deed between Samuel Julin and Clayborne Condrey [sic], who I believe is Mary's father, in 1815, and one between Samuel Julian and William Condrey in 1819. The 1819 sell off of land would agree with the time frame of SDJ's move to Kentucky, and then on to Warrick Co., IN.

She was born 18 Apr 1789 in Knox Co., Tennessee/N.C., and died 08 Jul 1866 in Rhea Co., Tennessee.
Notes for Beriah Frazier:
on 1850 census living with this family is James A. Lykes, 11???
lived in Rhea County by 1830, by 1848 was in Hamilton,
Married in a Quaker Church in Greeneville
Beriah replaced as road overseer May, 7, 1832 in Rhea Co., Tennessee. There was a Frazier Ferry on Tennessee River in Rhea County (06 of August 1832)
Beriah and Barbara raised their eleven children and two from the first marriage to adulthood, residing in Knox County, Tennessee, prior to moving to " Frazier Bend", Rhea County, Tennessee in 1818.
Another source says they were buried at Beriah Frazier Cemetery.
Another source says:
Beriah and Barbara lived in Knox County until 1818, at which time they came to Rhea County, and settled eight miles east of Dayton, on the Tennessee River, where they passed the remainder of their days. They were among the first settlers of Rhea County, immigrating there several years before the Indians moved out.
Before he came to Rhea County, Beriah was engaged in the service of the United States, concerning the Indians on the Tennessee. River. He held the office of justice of the peace for Rhea County for several years in addition to running his medical practice. Beriah was the second mayor of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
One can easily surmise that the Beriah was raised in and provided for a well-to-do home (at least relatively speaking) with law degrees, medical degrees and property holdings; very much needed to support large families in the least! The Civil War deflated most of the "trickle down" generational effect of the financial well being enjoyed by the families of Beriah and his father. Beriah and Barbara resided as man and wife for 40 years as "Doctor and Mrs. FRAZIER" in Rhea County; no doubt, comfortably. Beriah would not live long enough to hear of the first shot fired launching the Civil War. Barbara would live through the war as a widow, passing away in Rhea County on July 8, 1866. Her life was filled with extreme highs and heartbreaking lows as a mother of 13 children from her marriage in 1806 through the close of the Civil War.
Descendants of Beriah FRAZIER:
With roots firmly established in Knox and Rhea Counties, the descendants of Beriah could easily warrant a chapter of a book that might be titled, "Tennesseans Who Fought for the Confederate States of America". Considering those counties in proximity to the closest Union state and the North Carolina background of the FRAZIER family, it would be tough to find any of Beriah's descendants wearing a blue uniform. Though the Civil War would not include the children of Beriah and Samuel, their grandsons and grandsons-in-law would be affected greatly by the war ranging from death on the battlefield, crippling injuries and, for some who survived, opportunities for political prominence.
