Born 27 August 1841 in Louisville, TN. He died 28 March 1888 in Louisville and is buried in Middlesettlements. He was married to Martha E. Miser on December 6, 1866. He owned a farm in Louisville on what is called Jenkins Ridge...I believe the way to get there is Miser Station Road to Dug Gap Road to Bryant Road.

This military service information is from his pension file. He was prisoner of war.

James A. Jenkins was a Private in Company G, of the Third East Tennessee Infantry Volunteers...subsequently the 3rd Regiment Tennessee Infantry Volunteers. He enrolled on the 12th day of February 1862 at Flat Lick, Kentucky for three years. He was honorably discharged in Nashville, TN on the 23rd day of February 1865. (Note:other file info says he enrolled on 10 February 1862.) He was captured at Lookout Mountain in the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. He was taken to Liby (sic) Prison at Richmond, Virginia and from there to Danville, Virginia and while there in prison contracted typhoid (word could be pneumonia) fever and in same prison and at time he had fever had his feet badly frozen. The fever settling in his left breast and side.
He was treated in prison at Danville and in May, 1864 was released and was in hospital at Anapolis(sic), Maryland and at Asylum hospital Knoxville Tennesee til about February 1865.
In his pension file, James A. Jenkins says he "was exchanged about May 1864." He says he contracted typhoid penumonia fever and frozen feet while at Danville prison and also had feet frost bitten. He says it was about December 1863 or January 1864.
He was farmer and totally disabled when he applied for a pension in 1886.
His wife continued to collect his pension until her death in 1912.
