Colored Citizens Meeting (1882)
At a meeting of the colored citizens of Maryville, on Thursday night last, my name was presented as a candidate for Justice of the Peace for the Taxing District of Maryville. Upon taking a vote I received a majority of votes, after which my nomination was made unanimous.
I hereby acknowledge the honor and accept the nomination, and ask the suffrage of all citizens of the town, irrespective of party, race or creed. If elected, I will try to discharge the duties of the office impartially and as efficiently and faithfully as I can. I will administer the law without fear or favor. — W.B. SCOTT
