Samuel Frazier, 1749-1839



SAMUEL FRAZIER was one of the framers of Tennessee’s Constitution, and the first State Senator from Greene County, Tennessee. He was born April 10, 1749. Some references say he was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, a son of a Samuel Fraizer, while other references say he was was born in France of Huguenot ancestry; names of parents not known. During the Revolutionary War, he participated in the Battle of King’s Mountain. Pioneer, soldier, and lawyer. Married on March 17, 1771 to Rebecca Julian. Children--Abner, Beriah, Thomas, Julian Frazier, Barbara, and Samuel Frazier, Jr. Member of Tennessee Constitutional Convention, 1796. He served in the Tennessee Senate, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd General Assemblies, 1796-1801; representing Green County; he was a Whig in later life. He was attorney-general, 11th district, 1831-36. Died in Greene county on April 10, 1839; buried in Bearden Cemetery, Greene County. Father of Julian Frazier, grandfather of Constantine Frazier and of Beriah Frazier, all sometime members Tennessee General Assembly; great-grandfather of James Beriah Frazier, sometime Governor of Tennessee and United States Senator.
