June Term 1847

 

State of Tennessee, Benton County, June Term 1847

At a County Court began and held for the County of Benton at the Courthouse in the Town of Camden on the first Monday in June, it being the 5th day of said Month in the year of our Lord One thousand eighteen hundred & forty seven and 71st year of American Independence, their being present and presiding on the bench the worshipfuls, Esqrs, (to wit) Elijah Alsop, Nathan Williams, John W. Davidson.

The Commissioners who were appoint at a former term of this Court to pay off and asset apart a sufficiency of provisions to serve the widow and family of Elisha Jackson deceased one year which said report was examined and approved by the Court and ordered to be recorded.

The Clerk of this Court presented a settlement Made with John Buchanan administrator of the estate of John B, Graham deceased which said settlement was examined and approved by the Court and ordered to be recorded.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Furney W. Pearce be appointed overseer of the road in romm of Thomas Kee to work from Lilly Crocker’s to the Creek the other side of Samuel B. Pearce’s, hands as follows; W. Jordan, Littlebury Pearce, Darling Pearce, John House, Thomas Kee, James Holland and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Furney W. Pearce on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued June 9th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Joshua Curtis be appointed overseer of the road in room of Ulysses Kirk to work from the forks of the road at Nivins to Carroll County line, hands as follows; Green Flowers’ hands, James Flowers, Archibald Kirk, Wilie Ellis, Peter Self, Jr., Thomas Curtis, Theophilus Kirk, Jesse Hale, John D. Norden, Redden Hollowell, Jerrymiah Hale, Richard Evans, Martin Evans, Gillim Smothers and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Joshua Curtiss on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Jan. 9th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that George W. Farmer, Wilie Arnold, John Davis, Berry Vester and David W. Benton be appointed on the part of Benton County as a Jury of Review to view and Mark a road commencing on the

June Term 1847.

West Bank of Tennessee River and running the best and nearest way to the Town of Camden and to Make return to the next term of this Court of the advantages and disadvantages arising to the public and individuals.

Issued June 9th.

The Clerk of this Court presented a settlement Made with Amos Bruce by the Revenue Commissioners for the year 1846, which said settlement was examined and approved by the Court and ordered to be recorded.

I, Irvin B. Carnes acknowledge Myself to owe and be indebted unto Aron V. Brown and his successors in office in the penal sum of Ten thousand dollars to be due and owing upon the bond of R.H. Hawthorn surveyor of Benton County to be subject to the same conditions and liabilities of the other securities in said bond in place of Daniel L. Settles who is this day released.

The Court then proceeded to appoint a Jury to serve at the Next term of the Circuit Court to be held for the County of Benton at the Courthouse in the Town of Camden on the 2nd Monday in September next, whereupon the following persons were appointed (to wit)

                        Wm. Turner, John Watson and Theophilus Presson.
7th Dist.                        John W. Hill, Age Hall Wm. Parker
8th Dist.                        Sterling Brewer, Eligah Alsop and Lewis Holland
9th Dist.
                        John W. Cooper, A.A. Askew, John Legate and Cullen Nowell

officer and that venire facias issue accordingly.

Issued June 9th, 1847.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that the sheriff proceed forthwith to open and hold an election in the first Civil district of said County for the purpose of electing a constable for said district in the place of James E. Merick removed.

June Term 1847

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Joseph Wiseman be appointed overseer of the road to work from the Town of Camden to the 2 Mile tree, hands as follows, James Presson, Hugh M. Brown, hands, Noah Strickland, Bery Cowell, Edward Cowell, Thomas Jones, John A. Smally, John B. Bridges, Wyly Smith, Henry Stegall, James F. Presson, Samuel G. Tittle, Harvy Lowthor, W.C. Prewett and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Wiseman on said road which is established in the 1st Class.

Issued June 7th.

Court then adjourned until Court in Course.
