State of Tennessee, Benton County, August Term 1842

At a County Court began and held for the County of Benton at the Courthouse in the town of Camden on the first day of August it being the first day said Month and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two and the 67th year of American Independence there being present & on the bench the worshipfuls Esqrs. D.P. Hudson, Chairman, E. Perkins, Geo.W. Farmer Justices to hold said Court of Quorum.

On Motion it is ordered that John Crabb be appointed overseer of the Maple Spring road beginning at the park below widow Matlocks and work to William Malin's & that the following hands work under said Crabb on said road (to wit) J.W. Matlock, Jas. Walker, W.J. Cocks, Wm. Brogan, Hiliary Crabb, Jas. Henry, Mansfield Henry, B.B. Barnett, F.R. Jett, Jas. Cox, Alfred Lewis, Geo. Lewis, John Hubbs, and Edward Hortley or in them bounds & said road in the Cross.

Issued 13th Aug., 1842.

On Motion of D.P. Hudson it is ordered by the Court that John Smalley, Beverly Herrin and Robert Rushing be appointed to examine the condition of Williams McGee of their vicinity & if they consider him from indigent circumstances he is in, that he is subject of the interposition of this court for his support that they so report to this court & at the same time recommend what sum they in their opinion believe will be required to support him one year & that the report the same to the next October Term of this Court.

Issued Aug. the 15th 1842.

Personally appeared in open Court William Warmack of said estate of Isaac Wyatt Decd. & return an inventory and amount of said Estate it being examined by the court & in oath being Made to the same it is therefore ordered by the court to be recorded.

Personally appeared in open Court E.F. Wills Trustee of Benton County & together with E. Perkins, Geo. W. Farmer & B. Vester his securities & entered into & acknowledged their Bond in the final sum of Eighteen hundred & two dollars for the faithful performances of said Trustee paying over & accounting for the school fund that comes into his hands as directed by law.

August Term 1842

Personally appeared in open Court Sarah Hatley, Guardian of Edward Williams and Standford Hatley Minor heirs of Hardy Hatley Deceased and together with Edward Hatley and Jonathan B. Cox her securities and entered into & acknowledged their bond in the sum of one thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs for the faithful performance of said Guardian.

The Court then proceeded to appoint commissioners for the Town of Camden in room of Ephraim Perkins, John F. Johnson, Green Flowers and Lewis Brewer, assigned and thereupon appointed; Thomas Jones, Lewis Cottingham and John W. Davidson commissioners to succeed those assigned and thereupon the said Jones, Cottingham and Davidson appeared in open Court and together with Ephraim Perkins, Samuel H. Davidson and John F. Johnson their securities entered in and acknowledged their bond in the sum of three thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs and the said Jones, Cottingham and Davidson took oath as prescribed by law accordingly

On Motion it was proposed to Make an order of record that the former Commissioners hand over to the present Commissioners all the papers and effects which are in their hands relative to the business of their office as Commissioners and the Ayes and Noes being taken thereon, those who voted in the affirmative are Esquires, J.R. Mathews, Nathan Williams, S.H. Davidson, Martin McAuley, E. Perkins, D.W. Benton, T.L. Floyd and Jesse D. Hall and those that voted in the Negative are Esqrs. Will Barnes, D.P. Hudson, and G.W. Farmer And so the same is Ordered by the Court.

August Term 1842

On Motion of Leon Cottingham who Made oath according to law and together with John F. Johnson his security appeared in open court and entered into and acknowledged their bond in the sum of three hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs.  It is ordered by the Court that Leon Cottingham have letters of Administration upon the estate of William Pickler Decd. to be Made out in due when required.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Jas. S. Sayles be appointed overseer of the Ross' ferry road from Ross' ferry to Chalk Level and that the following hands work under said Sayles on sd. road (to wit) S.G. Tuttle, Wm. Bellamy, E.P. Bellamy, Wm. Bellamy Senior, W.H. Camp. Wm. Northington, John Smith, Andrew Smith, Franklin Smith, James Smith, Richard Booker, Jas. Wyly & hands, Mastin Ford, James T. Ford, Isaac Davidson and Jackson Combs and all that live in the bounds to work under said Sayles on said road and said road is classed in the 2nd Class.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Wm. Swindle be appointed overseer of the road in room of Wm. Barnes & that all hands within the bounds who formally worked under said Barnes shall now work under said Swindle on said road which is established in the 2nd class.

Issued 13th Aug. 1842

Personally appeared in open Court John Buchanan Admr. of the Estate of John B. Graham deceased and returned an inventory and amount of sale of said Estate it being examined by the Court and concurred in and oath being Made to the same it is therefore ordered by the Court to be recorded.

Personally appeared in open Court David M. Burkett who was constitutionally elected Constable in the second district and together with E.F. Jordan, Ehpraim Burkett, Jeremiah Perry and Mouttan Merrick his securities and entered into and acknowledged their bond in the sum of four thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs and thereupon took the several oaths prescribed by law.  So Court adjourned until Court in Course.
