Stephen Thomas Rushing, the son of Richard P. and Mahala (Ashcraft) Rushing was 17 when he enlisted on Dec 6, 1861 at Danville, Tennessee, in Capt R. W. Ayres' company of infantry. The officer who enlisted him was Maj McConier/McConyer. He was still with the company when it was reorganized as Captain J. R. Williams' Company, Unattached Cavalry, in August 1862.

At some point he was captured, as he is listed with a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, from May - July 1863. From 12-24 July, he was hospitalized at the General Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond, VA, with a diagnosis of Feb. Remitt., which I believe to be an unidentifiable fever. He apparently returned to his unit, as he was with Co. E, Nixon's Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry when it surrendered on May 5 and was paroled on 11 May, 1865.
