5th Tennessee Infantry History

The 5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was raised for State service on 20 May 1861 and contained the first men from Benton County, TN. The regiment was organized at Paris, TN and moved to Camp Brown at Union City, Obion County, TN. Here it was reported on 31 July 1861, with 860 men armed with flintlock muskets. The regiment was accepted into Confederate service at Camp Brown on 9 August 1861 and sent to Columbus, KY. At Columbus the regiment was assigned to Cheatham's Brigade on 7 September 1861. Next to Travis Brigade on 24 October 1861 and then to Stewart's Brigade on 18 January 1862, and remained in this brigade for the remainder of the war.

The Regiment Field Officers were:
Colonel William E. Travis, Colonel Calvin D. Venable and Colonel Jonathan J. Lamb. After the Battle of Shiloh, Colonel Venable succeeded Travis in command of the regiment. Lieutenant Colonel John D.C. Adkins, Lieutenant Colonel Calvin D. Venable and William C. Swor, Major William C. Swor, Major Jonathan J. Lamb, and B.B. Bunch.

5th Tennessee Infantry Company E

Company E was the first to be raised for state service on 20 May 1861 with 116 men from Benton County, TN. They were mustered into Confederate service on 9 August 1861 and assigned to the 5th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The Company was reorganized on 5 May 1862 after the Battle of Shiloh. P.G. Swor was elected their captain.
