Obituary of Luther Ledford Allen, 1994:

Luther Ledford Allen, 75, of Claxton, died Tuesday, May 3, at home.

He was a member of Zion Baptist Church of Claxton.

Mr. Ledford was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army with the 88th division. He retired from Union Carbide Corp. An avid baseball enthusiast, he played with the Knoxville Smokies and signed with the St. Louis Browns.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steve “Zyro” Allen; his mother, Betty Jane Allen; and brother, Arthur “Ott” Land.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Clayton Allen; daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Keith Gaines; brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Glenna Allen; cousin, Homer Logsdon; sisters-in-law, Blanche Lones, Gladys Peterson, Hazel Blalock, Beulah Wilder and Cynthia Clayton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2 pm Friday, May 6 at Weaver’s Chapel with the Rev. Glen Gamble officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 pm Thursday at Weaver’s Cumberland Memorial Chapel.
