Note by Dennis Slagle:
Hubert Barnett who has lived near the cemetery all his life says "it used to be called the Price Cemetery and there used to be bunches of field stone markers in the cemetery that somebody has removed." Also there was a transcription done in 1955 by Mary Hardin McCown recorded in the Washington County cemetery book that also lists it as the Price Cemetery and she says there were "about 75 rock markers with no inscriptions". This is probably correct as this cemetery is on land that was once owned by the original Mordecai Price and Racheal Boren Price. A lot of their decendants are probably buried there as they were all given land from Mordecai and lived there.

Anne Price (2-6-1858 - 9-23-1929) is buried there and the grave is marked.  She and husband Jim Slagle are both buried there.  Anne inherited land close by from her father Mordecai Price (don't know exactly how much).  This Mordecai is, according to my records, the son of Thomas Price, who is the son of the original Mordecai and Rachael.  Hubert Barnett is the grandson of Anne and Jim. His parents were Jesse Slagle (Jim and Anne's daughter) and Geder Barnett. Geder is buried there in a marked grave (don't know right off hand where Jesse is). He lives down the road about 1/8 mile.  Just behind him, his son lives in Ann and Jim's original house, which was built on Anne's inherited land.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATON:

From Washington County Cemetery Check List

Established after the Civil War by Samuel D. Bayless.

From History of Washington County Tennessee 1988 by Watauga Association of Genealogists, p.232:

Daniel, son of John and Ann Price Bayless, received a land grant from the State of North Carolina, October 19, 1797. This land is the Bayless property in the present day Carter Sell area.

Daniel built a six-room log house, which presently faces Chatham Avenue. It is still occupied as a residence. An addition was built on the back part of the house, which originally was the front, facing west. This house and farm later became the property of Richard, son of Daniel and Martha Eaton Bayless. Richard married Susannah Geisler, and they had three children: John Washington, Samuel D., and Martha A.. Susannah taught her children the Dutch language from infancy, as well as the English language.

After the death of Susannah, the home went to Samuel D. Bayless, grandson of the builder. Samuel married Arrena Overfelt. They had six children, one of whom was named Eddie Byrd, born 23 October 1872.

Eddie Byrd married June 11, 1905, Fannie E. Carr. The old Carr home place is nearby on the Old Jonesborough  They lived on Eddie's father's farm. They had three children:  Eva Pearl, Walter Henry and Nellie Evelyn. Nellie Evelyn married Cecil Oliver Drayne. Eva Pearl married Luney Edward Drain. Their children:  Ruby, Luney Frank, and Judith.

Transcribed and contributed for use on the TNGenWeb-Washington County Page and in the USGenWeb Archives June 11, 2003, by Donna Briggs, Elaine Cantrell and Betty Jane Hylton.
