TALLEY, Columbus C. (1874-1952)
Rites Friday For Columbus Talley
Funeral services for Columbus C. Talley, retired farmer, were conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the chapel of High Funeral Home. Will Craven officiated and burial was in Liberty cemetery. Mr. Talley, 78, died Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home, 114 Riverside Drive, after an illness of two weeks. He was a native of Warren county, born July 15, 1874. His parents were James Talley and Martha Powell Talley and for a number of years he resided in the Oakland community, moving to McMinnville about ten years ago. Mr. Talley was married to Miss Roxie Pealer, who survives. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert Talley, and Howard Talley, McMinnville, and Clarence Talley, Nashville. TALLEY, Ida Cantrell (1888-1952)
Daylight community - Mrs. Ida Talley, operator of the Short Mountain telephone switchboard, and a cousin of the writer, (Hugh L. Jones) died very suddenly a week ago last Thursday morning. She was a sister of Mrs. Jim Freeman on the Smithville highway, where the body rested till Saturday evening, when it was carried to Horton Springs for funeral and burial. She only left a husband relatives and friends to mourn her death, as they had no children. She will be hard to replace in her work and will be greatly missed in the community. Southern Standard page 18 Rites In DeKalb For Mrs. Talley Mrs. Ida Cantrell Talley, operator of the Short Mountain Telephone exchange, died unexpectedly at her home in the 16th district of Cannon county Thursday morning, March 27, at 5 o'clock. She was 64. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29 at 2 o'clock at Whorton Springs Baptist church in DeKalb county. Burial was in Whorton Springs cemetery. A native of DeKalb county, Mrs. Talley was born February 24, 1888. She was a daughter of John Cantrell and Sarah Ferrell Cantrell and she was married February 19, 1911 to Lon Talley. He survives. Mrs. Talley was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jim Freeman, McMinnville, and Mrs. Robert Green, Nashville, and half-brother, Theo Cantrell, McMinnville. She was a half sister of the late Dr. Q. C. Cantrell, a prominent McMinnville physician for a number of years. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

TANNATT, John G. (???? - 1884)
Captain John G. Tannatt, formerly a citizen of this county and well known in this community, died Monday night at the residence of his father-in-law, Capt. James Clift, of consumption. Capt. Tannatt had only been here a few days, having arrived one day last week. He was a good natured and kind hearted gentleman. He was here but a few days with relatives and friends, but they did everything possible to give him relief and better his condition. On Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, his mortal remains were taken to the new cemetery for interment, followed by a large concourse of friends. The funeral service was conducted by Dr. Stainback, assisted by the choir of the C. P. Church.

TANNER, James Wilson (circa 1869-1950)
James Wilson Tanner, retired farmer, died at his home at New Town, near here, Friday morning at 12:30 o'clock. He was about 81 years of age. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite Church Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock with Rev. Henry Amstutz officiating. Burial was in the Riverside cemetery. Mr. Tanner, a native of Warren county, was a son of John Tanner and Mattie Tanner. He was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Mollie Anne Martin, four daughters, Mrs. T.J. Brown, Mrs. Fred Myers, Misses Mabel Tanner and Alene Tanner, all of McMinnville, and two brothers, Albert and Andrew Tanner, McMinnville.

Albert Tate, 75 Dies At Tarlton
Rites Thursday Albert F. Tate, 75-year-old retired farmer, died at the home of his brother, Joe B. Tate, here, January 25 at 5:25 a.m. He had been in ill health for the past two years. Funeral services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. At the Philadelphia Church in Grundy county. Bro. Binkley officiated, and burial was in the church cemetery. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tate, Albert Franklin Tate was born in Grundy county in November 1881. He was married to the former Miss Pearl King in 1901. She died August 4, 1955. Mr. Tate was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are six sons, Jasper, Paul and Lester Tate, Tarlton; Morton Tate, Fort Benning, Ga., and Roscoe and Edward Tate, Tarlton; four daughters, Mrs. W. L. Johnson, Augusta, Maine; Mrs. Joe B. Tate, McMinnville; Mrs. Sidney Walker, Beersheba, and Mrs. Albert Rogers, Petersburg, Florida, and two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Tate and Mrs. Mary Tate, both of Kemberly, Idaho. Funeral Services For Frank Tate Held Monday
Frank Tate, 61, died Saturday morning at his residence on Rt. 2, in Warren county after an illness of two and half months. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Armstrong Church of Christ and burial was in the Armstrong cemetery. The son of Albert Tate and Mollie McQuery he was born July 3, 1894 in Grundy county. He was married to Eugenia Rogers Tate who survives. Other survivors are one daughter, Mrs. John R. Alfred Taylor’s Rites Tuesday
Funeral services for Alfred Taylor, well known Rock Station farmer, were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Mt Vernon Methodist Church. Rufe Higgins, Church of Christ minister officiated and burial was in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Mr. Taylor, 79, died Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at his home just off Highway 70-S, near Rock Station. He had been ill three weeks. A native of Warren county, Mr. Taylor was born November 23, 1873. He was a son of Arthur Taylor and Nancy Vance Taylor and he was married to Miss Susie Roberts July 12, 1895. The Taylor family had resided in the Rock Station community for a number of years. Mrs. Taylor died April 28, 1952. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by three sons, Jess, Ben and George Taylor, all of Rock Station; one daughter, Mrs. Ben Keener, Rowland Station, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Christian, Dunlap. Rites Monday For Andrew J. Taylor
Funeral services for Andrew J. Taylor, retired farmer, Were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Hill's Creek church of Christ, officiated and burial was in Hill's Creek cemetery. Mr. Taylor, 83, died at his home in Smyrna community Sunday at 10:00 a.m., following and illness of two months. He was a native of Warren county, born December 20, 1870. Mr. Taylor was a son of A.J. Taylor and Catherine Dunlap Taylor and he was married to Miss Laura Bess. She died in 1948. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Church of Christ. He is survived by three sons, Lester, G. L. and Cleveland Bess Taylor, McMinnville; one daughter, Mrs. Charlie Madewell, Campaign, and three brothers, Sam Taylor, McMinnville, Marion Taylor, Laager and Frank Taylor, McMinnville. Mrs. Anner Allen Taylor, 79, wife of Will Taylor, died at Medical Clinic Friday morning at 5 o'clock. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Wharton Springs Baptist Church. Revs. Nixon and Ramsey officiated and burial was in Wharton Springs cemetery. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Dekalb county, and was a member of the Baptist church. Mrs. Bertha Taylor, 55, died at her home in the 6th district last Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Hill Creek Chruch of Christ with John W. High officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The deceased, a daughter of Tom Taylor and Marilda Slaughter Taylor, was born in Warren county, February 13, 1893. She was married to Frank Taylor, who survives. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bernon L. Pickett, Laager; two brothers, Jack Taylor and Albert Taylor, Painesville, Ohio., and two sisters, Mrs. Huston Vaughn of Chattanooga, and Mrs Daisy Smith of Spencer. Drew L. Taylor, Star Route carrier, farmer and veteran law enforcement officer, died unexpectedly at his farm in the ninth district of Coffee county, near Viola, Thursday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock. His death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Taylor was 66. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church with John W. High officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery. Mr. Taylor was a native of DeKalb county, born March 30, 1885. His parents were Ben T. Taylor and Mildred Smith Taylor and he was married to Miss Celia Lynn. Mrs. Eula Taylor, aged 71, died at the Medical Clinic Tuesday night after an illness of three weeks. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at High's Chapel and burial in Riverside cemetery. Rev. Charles Harvey officiated. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. A daughter of Dr. L.L Murrey and Ella Palmer, she was born February 21, 1885 in Marshall county. She married John Robert Taylor, a former Mayor of McMinnville, who survives. Other survivors are; three sisters, Miss Pearl Murrey, Lewisburg, Mrs. J. L. Woloner, Lewisburg, Mrs. J. T. Joe R. Taylor, farmer and nursery worker, died at his home on Beersheba Road Monday morning at 8:45 o’clock as a result of a stroke suffered only a few moments prior to his death., he was 59. Funeral rites were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at Hill’s Creek Church of Christ. J.R. Bailey, minister of Rockliff Church of Christ officiated and burial was in Hill’s Creek cemetery. A native of Warren county, Mr. Taylor was born May 7, 1893. He was a son of Norman Taylor and he served in the Army during World War I. John Riley Taylor, 93-year-old native of DeKalb county, died in Summerville, Georgia, last Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted at the parlors of High Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. E.L. Smothers, pastor of the Magness Memorial Baptist church. Burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Mr. Taylor, the son of Byars and Pricilla Fish Taylor, was born June 11, 1853. He had been a retired farmer for many years. His wife, who preceded him in death, was the former Miss Elizabeth McClellan. Survivors include three sons, Z.T. Taylor, Menlo, Ga.; W.R. Taylor, Harlan, Ky.; and D.T. Taylor of Nashville, three sisters, Mrs. J.B. Holder and Mrs. B.F. Lowery of McMinnville, and Mrs. W.L. Patton of Oklahoma City, Okla. Arrangements by High Funeral company.

Rites At Smyrna For Mrs. Taylor
Mrs. Kitty Ann Taylor, 72, wife of Leslie Taylor, died unexpectedly at her home in the fifth district Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Funeral rites were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. At Smyrna Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in Smyrna cemetery. Mrs. Taylor native of Warren county, was born July 1, 1882. She was a daughter of John Turner and Vesta Barnes Turner and she was first married to John Clendenon in May 1899. He died in 1909 and she was married in 1923 to Mr. Taylor. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors besides her husband, is a son, L.C. Clendenon, Murfreesboro; two grandsons, Robert Clendenon, Ft. Jackson, S.C. and L.C. Clendenon, Camp Chaffee, Ark.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Clifton O'Neal, McMinnville, and a brother, L. H. Turner, McMinnville. Mrs. Laura Jane Taylor, 73, wife of Andrew J. Taylor, died at the family home in the sixth district Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Hills Creek Church of Christ with Allen Phy minister of the Central Church of Christ officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Taylor, the daughter of John Bess, was born in Warren county December 3, 1873. She had resided in the county all of her life. Survivors are, in addition to her husband, three sons, Samuel Lester Taylor, Guvie Lee Taylor and Oliver Cleveland Taylor, all of McMinnville; and three sisters, Mrs. Art Brown and Mrs. Samuel Taylor, both of McMinnville, and Mrs. Marion Taylor of Palmer. Arrangements were under the direction of High Funeral Home.

TAYLOR, Nannie Jennings Cole
Mrs. Nannie Mai Cole Taylor, 88, died of an extended illness at her 1104 Orchard Lane residence at 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The Warren County native was a member of the Church of Christ and a daughter of the late W.C. and Samantha Gillentine Jennings. She was first married to Elmer Cole who died in 1945 and later to Reams Leslie Taylor who died Jan. 17, 1982. She is survived by daughters Louise Campbell of McMinnville, Mrs. Donnie Gross of Chattanooga, Mrs. Norma Jean Pemberton of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Mrs. Billie Faye Stovall of St. Gate, Mich., sons D.L. and Aubrey Cole of Nashville, 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Norman Taylor, Pioneer Citizen, Dies At Home
Norman Bible Taylor, probably Warren county's oldest citizen, died at his home near Trousdale Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about 3 months ago and had been in failing health since that time. "Uncle Norman," as he was familiarly known, was 97 years of age. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Hill's Creek Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in the Hill's Creek cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Warren county. Mr. Taylor was born May 7, 1853. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Arthur Taylor and was married to Miss Mollie Melgroves, who died a number of years ago. Robt. L. Taylor, On Japan Duty, Drowning Victim
A Campaign soldier, veteran of almost three years with Army infantry troops in the United States and the Far East, met death as a result of drowning in Japan on June 4. News of the fatal accident was forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. George Taylor, Rock Island Route 1, parents of Robert L. Taylor, victim of the drowning, last Thursday by Gen. Edward Witsell, Adjutant General of the Department of Army. Young Taylor, 19, a private first class with Infantry troops, was first reported missing after the June 4 date. No details of the fatal accident were released by the Army Department but the notification telegram stated that full details would follow. The Army also informed the parents that their son's body would be returned here at the earliest possible date for burial. No local arrangements have been made, pending further word from the Army. The deceased serviceman enlisted in the Army in August 1947 and received his basic training at a California Army installation. He left for overseas duty in Japan in January 1948, being stationed there since that time. Young Taylor, native of Warren county, was born April 10, 1931. He attended Plainview elementary school and Central high school here before enlisting in the military service. Soldier's Rites Held Tuesday
Last rites for Pfc. Robert L. Taylor, Campaign soldier who lost his life by drowning in Japan on June 4, were conducted at Mt. Vernon Methodist church, near his home, Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. John W. High officiated and military rites at he grave were under the direction of the American Legion-VFW burial squad. The infantry veteran, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Taylor, drowned while swimming in the Ainoua river at Sasebo, Kyushu, Japan, on June 4. His body was recovered four days later and was transported to his home here for burial, arriving Monday afternoon. Native of Warren county where he was educated in the public schools Pfc. Taylor enlisted for Army duty in August 1947 and sailed for overseas service in January 1948. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Cpl. Rites Held For Mrs. Susie Taylor
Funeral services for Mrs. Susie Taylor, wife of Alford Taylor, Campaign farmer, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Mt. Vernon church. John W. High officiated and burial was in Mt. Vernon cemetery. Mrs. Taylor, 73, although in failing health for the past few years, died unexpectedly Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock following a stroke suffered two days earlier. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Warren county, born December 25, 1878. She was a daughter of Ade Roberts and Mary Scott Roberts and she was married to Mr. Taylor July 12, 1895. She had made her home on Sparta road, near Campaign, for a number of years, and was a member of the Church of God. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Jesse Taylor, Ben Taylor and George Taylor, all well known citizens of the Campaign community; one daughter, Mrs. Ben Keener, Rowland; three brothers, Tom and Ben Roberts, Delphi, Ind., and Isham Roberts, Palmer; one sister, Mrs. Sallie Mayes, Doyle. She knew how to do things well; among them, Chair bottoming, basket making, Broom tying and in the role of midwife assisted in the ushering in of numbers of new lives. She was an expert gardener, both with vegetables and flowers. Mrs. Taylor was well known as a practical nurse, and will be greatly missed in her home and community. Survivors are her husband, Alfred Taylor, one daughter, Mrs. Ben Keener, three sons, Jess, Ben and George Taylor, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon cemetery.

TAYLOR, Wilburn Ray (circa 1929-1999)
Campaign resident and White County native Wilburn Ray Taylor, 70, died May 18 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville after a brief illness. A retired plumber and pipe fitter and a member of the Protestant faith, he was a member of Plumbers Local and Rock Island Lodge #451 F.&A.M. The son of the late Bill and Maude Shannon Taylor, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jenny Duke; and three brothers, John, Gene and Harold Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Mattie Lee Taylor; one daughter, Cheryl Marie Taylor of McMinnville; son and daughter-in-law, Randy Lee and Sherri Taylor of McMinnville; sister, Jessie Taylor of McMinnville; brother, George Taylor of Campaign; and granddaughter, Lauren Brooke Taylor of McMinnville. Services were held Thursday at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Case and Rev. Louis Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Mt. View Cemetery. Aged Resident Dies of Illness
William Richard Taylor, 84, resident of Warren county since 1947, died at Medical Clinic Friday at 11 p.m. He had been ill two weeks. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Chapel in DeKalb county. Hubert Nixon and John H. Taylor officiated and burial was in whorton Springs cemetery. A native of DeKalb county, Mr. Taylor was born April 11, 1870. He was a son of David J. and Elizabeth Taylor and he was married in 1889 to Miss Anna Allen, who preceded him in death. Dennis Overton Templeton, 62-year-old resident of 104 Creamery Street here, died of an extended illness in Coffee County Nursing Home, Manchester, on Friday. A native of this county, the retired construction worker was married to the former Wilma Bottoms who survives, and was a son of the late Samuel Hershel and Elizabeth Hennessee Templeton. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Spears, Manchester, and Norma Jo Swindell, Ohio; two brothers, Harrison Templeton, McMinnville, and Woodrow Templeton, Texas; two sisters, Elizabeth Neely, Texas, and Ellen Crain, of this city, as well as five grandchildren. Estill Springs resident Ernest Dale Templeton, 65, died of a brief illness in a Huntsville, Ala. hospital Saturday. The retired electrician was a member of the Church of Christ and a son of the late Orion and Shieldla Glenn Templeton. He is survived by his widow, Carlene Templeton, sons Bruce of Hattiesburg, Miss., and David Lynn Templeton of El Centro, Calif. He is also survived by a brother, Leon Templeton of McMinnville, and four grandchildren. The body is at Watson-Gamble Funeral Home in Winchester where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Francis Leon Templeton, 67-year-old resident of Route 2, Rock Island died of a lingering illness in Park View Hospital, Nashville at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. A member of the Church of Christ and native of Warren County, he was married to the former Rosa Lee Sharp and was a son of the late Frances Loren and Shirlda Jane Glenn Templeton. A welder by trade, he was retired from Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit. Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons and a daughter, Edward and Craig T. Templeton of McMinnville, Melvin D. TEMPLETON, Gary (circa 1948-1968)
Gary Templeton Killed In Action
Relatives here learned Friday that Army Private First Class Gary Dale Templeton, 20, a 1966 graduate of Central High School, was killed in Vietnam combat action on July 5. He had been reported missing in action since July 8. PFC Templeton was the son of Ernest Templeton and the late Louise Womack Templeton, the latter a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lanis Womack of the Midway community. The young soldier who had been in Vietnam for about four months, was inducted here last Septeber and in Vietnam was a rifleman in Alpha Company, 502nd Airborne Infantry, 101st (Screaming Eagles) Airborne Division. Prior to his death, PFC Templeton had been awarded the Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster for two combat action wounds and the Combat Infantryman's badge. PFC Templeton, who lived with his maternal grandparents while attending school here, had majored in science and math and was working in Detroit when called back here for Army induction. Survivors include his father and step-mother, who live at Estill Springs in Franklin County, a brother, Lynn and a half-brother, Bruce, as well as his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Shrilda Templeton, who spends the summer months in the Midway community. Pleas Templeton, Jr., 33-year-old employee of the Chrysler Corp., died unexpectedly at Ford Hospital, Detroit, at 11:55 p.m. Friday at the age of 33. A native of Detroit, he was a son of the late Pleas Templeton, Sr., and Mrs. Dimple J. Murdock Allen, who survives. Route 7, Manchester resident and White County native Willard Lee Templeton, 60, died suddenly March 13 at Harton Regional Hospital Medical Center in Tullahoma. A Korean War veteran, he was an electrical engineer at AEDC, a member of the Spotted Saddle Horse Exhibitors and Breeders Association in which he served as a judge. Mr. Temple was the son of Louise Hudson Templeton of Quebeck and the late Conrad Lee Templeton. Taken suddenly ill Friday, McMinnville Drug Center pharmacist Wilson C. Templeton, 58, was dead on arrival at River Park Hospital at 2 p.m. A resident of 213 West Sparta Street, he was a native of Alabama and lifelong resident of McMinnville. The Korean War veteran was a graduate of Central High School, attended Memphis State University and graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy at Memphis. A member of First Baptist Church, he was married to the former Velma Neely and was a son of the late William and Rachel Barlow Templeton. In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons and a daughter, Larry J. Templeton of Dennison, Minn., Garry L. Templeton of Largo, Fla., and Ann DuBose of St. Petersburg, Fla. He is also survived by two sisters and three brothers, Cynthia Pegg of McMinnville, Connie Cutts of Chattanooga, Edward of Holly Hill, Fla., John of Tacoma, Wash. and Allen Templeton of Crawfordville, Ga. Albert Delta Tenpenny, Cannon county farmer, died at his home in the eighth district Monday, July 14, at 4:45 o'clock, following a year's illness. He was 63. Funeral services were held the following day at 2:30 o'clock at the residence with John W. High officiating. Burial was in Leoni cemetery. Mr. Tenpenny was born in Cannon county, February 8, 1889. His parents were Mumford and Margaret Hayes Tenpenny and he was married November 5, 1911 to Miss Clara Northcutt. She survives. He was a member of the Church of Christ. A native of Putnam county, Mrs. Thaxton was born June 2, 1886. She was a daughter of James Herd Carr and Elizabeth Campbell Carr. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Thomas B. Thaxton and Thurman G. Thaxton, McMinnville; three daughters, Mrs. Roy Allison and Mrs. Sidney Locke, McMinnville, and Mrs. Clark Jarrell, Tullahoma; four brothers, Henry Carr, Coffee county, Gilbert and Parris Carr, Texas, and Matt Carr, Morrison; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Golliday, McMinnville. THOMAS, Annie Bonner
Annie Marie Thomas, 57-year-old resident of Route 9, Leesburg, died Monday at Warren County General Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Lincoln County and a member of East End Church of Christ, she was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Thomas. She was the daughter Jerry Bonner and Ida Webb. Mrs. Thomas is survived by three step-daughters, Mrs. Robert Harris and Mrs. George Haynes of McMinnville and Mrs. Paul Guest of Manchester. One step-son, Freeman Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio. also survives along with 11 step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. A wake will be held Friday from 7-8 p.m. with funeral services scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel. Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery with Philip Smith officiating.

THOMISON, Ida Grove (circa 1905 - 1971)
Ida Thomison, 66-year-old widowed resident of the Shady Rest community, succumbed to an extended illness at River Park Hospital at 3 p.m. Monday. A native of Van Buren County and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the widow of Henry Thomison and a daughter of the late Dee and Lou Mayfield Grove. Survivors include two sons, Charles and Carl Thomison, of Vandalia and Dayton, Ohio, respectively; a daughter, Mrs. Rita Johnson, McMinnville; a brother, Clifton Grove, Rock Island; three sisters, Mrs. Parrett Moffitt, Rock Island and Mrs. Aaron Martin and Mrs. Avo Kell, both of McMinnville, as well as seven grandchildren. With Clayton Gribble, J.R. Boren and John W. High officiating, final rites were conducted at White Hill Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Wednesday, burial following in the cemetery there. Thrower Rites Held Sunday
Leroy Northcutt Thrower, 47, died at the home of his father, James T. Thrower, on Edison street, Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock. He had been in ill health for several years. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Thrower home. Rev. Geddes Orman, minister of Main Street Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Riverside cemetery. A native of McMinnville, Mr. Thrower was born May 10, 1904. He was a son of James T. and Mary Emeline Stubblefield Thrower and was married to Miss Mamie Tanner May 10, 1935. She survives. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by two sons, Clarence Nelson Thrower and James Andrew Thrower, McMinnville; two brothers, Anderson Thrower and Logan Thrower, McMinnville; three sisters, Mrs. C.L. W. J. Thrower Dies Of Burns; Rites Thursday
A native McMinnvillian died in Rutherford County hospital Wednesday afternoon at 3:45 o’clock, three hours after his burned body had been found at the edge of a woods fire on Halls Hill road, near Murfreesboro. Fatally injured by the severe burns was W. J. (Buck) Thrower, veteran of World War II and son of the late John Thrower and Mary Webb Thrower, of McMinnville. Thrower was found lying in the edge of the burning area by a man listed as Jim Adams, a resident of the area, who walked from his home to investigate the fire. He was rushed to the hospital where he died without regaining consciousness. According to Rutherford county officers, Thrower and a man listed as Malcolm Compton had been asleep in the area when heat from the flames awakened Compton. The man said he attempted to pull Thrower from the flames but was unable to do so because the disabled war veteran was “too” heavy. Deputy sheriff Billy Blanton of Rutherford county said Thrower’s clothes were burned from his body and only pieces of his shirt and 30 cents in money were found. Born and reared in McMinnville, Thrower was educated in the public schools here and resided at Woodbury at the time he entered the military service during World War II. Injured in the service, he returned to Woodbury where he operated a taxi for several years before accepting similar employment in Murfreesboro. He was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors include a brother, E.B. Thrower, San Antonio, Texas, and five aunts, Mrs. Minnie Lassiter, McMinnville; Miss Idelle Webb, Mrs. Fannie Hayes and Mrs. W. N. Nichols, Woodbury, and Mrs. Johnny Cowan, Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services for the fatally injured man were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. F. S. THROWER, William Robert (1873 - 1953)
Rites Monday For W.R. Thrower, 79
William Robert (Bob) Thrower, 79, retired McMinnville meat market operator and well known resident, died at his residence, 505 N. Chancery Street, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Monday afternon at 2:30 o’clock, at the parlors of High Funeral Home. Parker Henderson, minister or Tullahoma Church of Christ, and W.H. Owen local minister, officiated and burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Born at Woodbury, November 10, 1873, Mr. Thrower was a son of John Thrower and Mattie Stewart Thrower and he was married December 7, 1893 to Miss Sallie Lawrence. She survives. A residents of McMinnville for almost half a century, Mr. Thrower operated a meat market until ill health forced his retirement some 12 years ago, however since that time he had continued to manufacture and pack sausage and his product had a wide distribution in this area. Mr. Thrower was a member of the Church of Christ. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Lehman Thrower, Tullahoma; two daughters, Mrs. Effie Sain, McMinnville, and Mrs. Carl Werber, Atlanta, Ga., also one sister, Mrs. Bettie Magness, McMinnville and a brother, Marion Thrower, Nashville. Former Resident Dies In Illinois
News was received here Friday of the death in Evanston, Ill., of Edwin Thurman, 70, retired insurance executive, which occurred there on that date. Funeral services and burial took place in Evanston, Monday. Mr. Thurman, born and reared in McMinnville was a son of the late Isaac Thurman and was a nephew of Mrs. R.G. Hutchins of McMinnville. Oliver Thurman, Brother Of Mrs. Hutchins, Dies
Was Insurance Official
Oliver Thurman, 76, member of a pioneer McMinnville family and retired vice-president of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark, N.J., died in a Charlottesville, Va., hospital Wednesday. A resident of Keswick, Va., Mr. Thurman had been in ill health for several months. He was a brother of Mrs. R.G. Hutchins of McMinnville and Dr. Robert Thurman, Sparta. Born in McMinnville, Mr. Thurman entered the insurance field in 1933 as an agent at Dallas, Texas, and except for an eight-year period, 1911 to 1919, he continued his association with the Mutual Benefit company until his retirement in 1947. Educated at North Texas Normal College, the insurance executive taught school in Texas for seven years and he was first chairman of the Life Insurance Sales Research Bureau, which later became Life Insurance Agency Management Association. He was also a trustee for many years of the American College of Underwriters. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Thurman was vice-president of the underwriting department of Mutal Benefit. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Thuraman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Harriet Terrell Thurman, a native of Winchester; two daughters and a son.
