Office of Sheriff, 1824-1940 |
|
Fletcher G. Edwards 1824-1826 |
H. W. Hickman |
| To the best of the ability of several Obion Countians, it is believed that
Sheriff Easterwood served between Finch and Chiles, and is documented as
serving during 1908 and 1909. His name was omitted from the list in Marshall's
"Obion County History." Obion County History, 1981, p. 143 "T. J.
(Easterwood) made bond in (1908) to serve as sheriff. For a time the family lived in
the jail in Union city, where daughter Martha Alice and granddaughter Mildred were
born." "Biographies and Family Web Pages" and the minor heading "Bios of Early Settlers," the bio of Joel S. Enloe mentions that he was sheriff from 1826-1836. This being true, the first sheriff, Fletcher Edwards must have served from 1824-1826. (Enloe was Sheriff on 23 Dec 1836 at least. Alexander Marshall bought his first farm in Obion Co from Sheriff Enlow on that day. Bk 1C pg 382 Thanks Dennis in Union CityŠ) Another bio under the same heading, concerns the Polk family. In it is the
statement, . . . Thomas A. who was sheriff of Obion County from 1836 - 1840. * Glory and Tears, p. 12: Appointed Special Sheriff And now, here's another monkey wrench into the sheriff list. On page 112
of the book "Glory and Tears," David Hubert is listed as sheriff in 1862 at the
time his son was killed at Shiloh. How does he fit into the list? Obion Co, TN Court Records, 10/1849-9/1861 David Hubert was elected special sheriff 8/1862 then on
9/1862 William Haislip was elected special sheriff... |

There are other updates and corrections needed in
this list.
Please send them to the Obion TNGenWeb County Coordinator and
include your source.
It would also be great to have the exact dates these men served
in office.
Thanks.
