Mt. Zion United Methodist Churchhas been the house of worship for Methodists, Baptists and Cumberland Presbyterians together in Solitude Church, erected circa 1830, four and one-half miles north of Union City until it burned. After this W. B. McConnell, Robert Gregory and E. L. Ragland organized Mount Zion Methodist Church in 1845 in Green Brier School. Under the leadership of Rev. Gideon H. Bransford a log building was constructed in 1847 at the present location on land given by S. C. DeBow. |
In 1856, a large oak demolished the building during a summer storm. The next spring, 1857, a frame building was erected with slave labor. The membership at this time was 64 white members and 34 black. Records indicate that Sunday School was conducted from the year 1868. Hickman Circuit moved to the Union City District in 1881 and included five churches: Rush Creek, Harmony, Ebenezer, Shady Grove and Mt. Zion. In 1891 the circuit name was changed to the Cayce Circuit, but at the Annual Conference 1903 Mt. Zion was again placed in the Union City Circuit. In 1906, a brick building was erected east of the 11857 frame building during the leadership of Rev. S. F. Wynn and an annex was added in 1947 during the ministry of John B. Underwood. The First boy Scout Troop in Fulton (Co. KY) and Obion Counties was organized in 1911 at Mt. Zion with Ed Roberts as leader. Members were Charles B. Roberts, Carr Crenshaw, Brevard Crenshaw, Al Hale, Algie B. Hale, Robert Barham, Drewery Bondurant and Rufus McConnell. T. H. McMurry was Scoutmaster. |
